Should a suitable candidate not be found, external candidates will be considered.The Financial Aid Advisor – Special Populations (FAA-SP) offers expert advice, guidance, and services to students on a wide range of financial matters. The FAA-SP assists students in accessing federal, provincial, and institutional funding sources, interprets and delivers government loan and grant programs, and analyzes frequently changing standards and complex requirements to ensure compliance with multiple programs and policies. The FAA-SP maintains the accuracy of student financial aid application data for targeted student populations who are recipients of funding through OSAP or other student aid programs. The FAA-SP is also responsible for developing and coordinating timely communications and outreach initiatives to targeted student populations in addition to ensuring online content is updated to reflect accurate details pertaining to financial aid support.By optimizing student service and the student experience, the FAA-SP significantly impacts Sheridan’s student enrollment and retention by supporting services within the Student Financial Services (SFS) department, aligning with Sheridan’s strategic enrollment management plan.What You’ll Be Doing

  • Oversees, reviews and actions numerous incoming student financial inquiries and requests from multiple sources (i.e., phone, in-person, and online inquiries)
  • Assesses the financial circumstances of students to accommodate unique situations and provides financial aid options (e.g., loans, payment plans) to support student recruitment/retention.
  • Advises/guides on financial aid program eligibility and appeal processes.
  • Counsels on tuition and fee payment, loan obtainment, repayment, overpayments, and maintenance.
  • Provides specific information about course costs and program fees.
  • Maintains knowledge of frequent/complex policy/procedural revisions (Ministry, College, departmental)
  • Reviews/completes numerous Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) work queues and departmental reports related to financial aid programs (e.g., confirmation of enrollment (COE), missing program queue, Image Portal, and continuation of interest-free status (CIFS).
  • Processes documentation for applications related to financial aid programming (e.g., Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) image portal, OSAP appeals, out-of-province program information, Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD).
  • Evaluates/processes OSAP appeals in compliance with MCU documentation requirements, OSAP policy guidelines, and appeal criteria requisites.
  • Completes out of province program information forms, releases funding with respect to provincial policies and procedures and liaises with provincial ministry officers.
  • Analyzes student accounts and investigates and resolves account discrepancies to support credit clean up activities.
  • Maintains accuracy for a portfolio of student accounts empowering student communications and accurate reporting.
  • Utilizes OSAP Year-to-date (YTD) and Student Information System (SIS) reports to identify target student groups (e.g., ESL students, Youth in Care) to develop specialized programming and support services.
  • Analyzes and completes semester withdrawal, bad grades, and full-time, part-time reports in accordance with OSAP and Sheridan policy and procedures.
  • Works in partnership with various Sheridan departments to support student retention and support related to educational finances.
  • Develops and delivers workshops to educate students on how to meet their educational financial obligations each term (e.g., applying for financial aid programs, paying fees on time, budgeting).
  • Develops plans for communications to targeted student populations.
  • Creates and manages website and communication content.
  • Participates in special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Must possess a minimum 4-year degree or equivalent in Business, Education, Finance/Accounting, Social Services, English, Communications, or related field of study
  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years of Experience working in an office or academic/educational environment dealing with sensitive and confidential information, meeting Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) compliance and assisting students and other clients from various socio-cultural and financial backgrounds.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training to clients, coop internship students, part-time or temporary workers.
  • At least one year of experience working in a Financial Aid Office, and familiarity with financial analysis and planning with Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) policy and application requirements (or an equivalent combination of experience and education).
