Job Overview:
The Principal, Welding Engineering is responsible for providing welding engineering support to all vessel construction activities at Vancouver Shipyards (VSY). Key Responsibilities:
- Lead welding process development and produce applicable documentation. Optimize and enhance underperforming weld processes.
- Implement traditional and novel welding processes and equipment to address complex welding issues.
- Perform failure analysis as required and provide solutions to welding problems with a high degree of complexity.
- Create and review technical documents such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Work Instructions (WI), and forms to ensure compliance with welding standards.
- Implement various material, welding, and testing codes and standards (e.g., ISO, Lloyds, DNV-GL, CSA, ASME, AWS) to ensure consistency and quality.
- Review subcontractors’ welding procedures, processes, and documentation, including welding inspection reports, ensuring alignment with required standards and quality.
- Conduct welding-related quality control audits at supplier sites and provide technical advice to resolve welding issues.
- Coordinate and monitor Procedure Qualification Record tests, including preparing WPS/PQR paperwork.
- Build relationships with suppliers, customers, and Classification societies to support welding quality improvement. Liaise with internal departments to address welding quality concerns.
- Identify and address project-specific contractual welding requirements to ensure they are met within the scope of the work.
- Advise on the purchase of new welding equipment, creating detailed technical specifications for procurement.
- Lead research on new welding technologies and trends, evaluating their applicability to improve existing processes.
- Support tasks and projects with the Welding Centre of Excellence.
- Conduct experimental welding trials to evaluate new equipment, technologies, and techniques with a view to introducing them into Seaspan’s operations.
- Contribute to various Research and Development (R&D) projects aimed at advancing welding techniques and processes.
- Attend formal inspections with customers and regulatory bodies, documenting non-conformities and collaborating with the Quality Department to resolve issues.
- Perform daily in-process quality inspections, documenting results and communicating findings to responsible supervisors and quality teams.
- Review new construction models and drawings from a welding perspective, providing technical support to Design/Engineering teams as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A degree in Welding Engineering or Metallurgy (or equivalent). A Master’s degree is desirable.
- International Welding Engineer (IWE) certification from the International Institute of Welding (IIW) is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years of post-secondary experience in welding engineering in a large manufacturing environment.
- Experience in the shipbuilding industry is highly desirable.
- Experience in supervising welding engineering activities and team members.
- Demonstrable experience in Continuous Improvement functions.
- Eligible to obtain the P.Eng. status.
- CSA W178.2 Level 1 or 2 Welding Inspector certification (or international equivalent such as AWS CWI and IIW IWI) is highly desirable.
- Nondestructive testing (NDT) education and experience is preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of shipbuilding welding procedures, including at a minimum shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).
