Job description: Job Category: EngineeringJob Description:The OpportunityWSP is currently seeking a Communications Designer to join our Rail &Transit team, located at any WSP office. Reporting to the Systems Design Manager, you will work with the Lead Communication Engineer and the Systems team to support the systems delivery team on a major urban rail extension project, involving the integration of new-build infrastructure with legacy transit systems. You will be responsible for the oversight of contractor submittals, systems design reviews, and the technical assurance of critical communications subsystems throughout the design, integration, and commissioning lifecycle.   • Provide technical review and oversight of design team and contractor submittals for systems including:
  • CCTV, Public Address (PA), Telephony, Passenger Info Systems (PVIS), Fare Collection, DAS/VDRS Radio, Guideway Intrusion Detection System (GIDS), SCADA, and Backbone Communications Network (BCN)
  • Lead and participate in technical workshops to:
  • Resolve system interfaces,
  • Clarify performance requirements,
  • Coordinate integration with legacy infrastructure
  • Contribute to the development and review of:
  • Interface Control Documents (ICDs),
  • Systems Integration Plan (SIP),
  • Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP),
  • Configuration Management Plans
  • Coordinate with Systems Assurance and Testing & Commissioning teams to align FIT/SIT/IST test requirements with communications systems readiness
  • Participate in site visits, factory and lab-based integration reviews, and off-site system testing environments
  • Support configuration traceability and verification activities using requirements tools such as DOORS NG
  • Collaborate closely with:
  • Internal design teams,
  • The Construction and Testing workstreams,
  • The project operator and third-party systems vendors when required
  • Ensure all system design packages and test documentation align with the performance and availability targets of the integrated system, contributing to a seamless transition to revenue operations

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical, Systems, or Communications Engineering (or related) discipline from an accredited University that is recognized by the Professional Engineers of Alberta/Ontario;
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario (P. Eng.) or an equivalent with the ability to get a P.Eng. license is preferred;
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant rail industry experience, preferably direct experience with communications systems engineering on complex, multi-system transit projects across both greenfield and brownfield environments;
  • Familiarity with Systems such as Communications Systems includes SCADA, Backbone Communication Network (BCN) – Fiber Optic Infrastructure, Emergency Trip System (ETS), Intrusion Access Control (IAC), Information Display Systems (IDS), Central Alarm Monitoring System (CAMS), Operator Control Centre/Backup Operations Control Centre/ Safety Security Office (OCC/BOCC/SOO) and Rolling Stock communication systems;
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS, and experience in structured interface development and system traceability

Additional qualifications:

  • Proven leadership and management skills;
  • Ability to work successfully in multi-disciplinary teams and across different business units in a matrix organization with little to no supervision;
  • Ability to perform in a lead capacity (must be able to demonstrate leadership skills/abilities through prior work experience);
  • Ability to adapt well to changes in direction, priorities in a project, and deadline-oriented environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including communication, presentation, leadership, and report writing proficiency with a strong desire and ability to collaborate in problem solving in an integrated team environment;
  • Experience in a Consulting Engineering environment is an asset.

Preferred experience:

  • Experience with progressive design-build or alternative delivery methods
  • Involvement in Testing & Commissioning phases (including development of System Integration Test (SIT) and Integrated System Test (IST) plans and participation in readiness reviews)
  • Familiarity with systems assurance disciplines such as RAM, Safety, and EMC as well as Metrolinx Design Standards and Design Manuals
  • Experience with integration of communications systems in environments with active operations and interfaces with legacy system
  • Exposure to lab-based integration testing environments and understanding of cutover planning strategies
