Join our team at ROM and consider a fulfilling career in the museum field through experience as a Chopra Family Indian Ocean Summer Intern.POSITION SUMMARY:Under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Fee, Senior Curator of Global Fashion & Textiles, and working alongside an enthusiastic team of ROM curators and technicians, this role places you at the heart of the ROM’s ambitious project: an exhibition and publication dedicated to unravelling the complex narratives of the Indian Ocean world through its art, culture, and natural history. The work will involve a broad spectrum of objects, from textiles and dress, works on paper, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, lacquer, metalwork, contemporary art, as well as natural history specimens. Your specific research topics may explore the use of incense and incense burners and the navigational tools that once bridged cultures. This internship offers the opportunity to gain valuable insight into the development of a museum exhibitions, including ancillary tasks like collections research and data entry, setting a solid foundation for a career in art and cultural heritage.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the curator(s) to update, develop, and maintain a preliminary Object List and associated Bibliographies focusing on various types and areas of Indian Ocean art, material culture, and natural history.
  • Support the curator(s) in conducting detailed research on individual objects, trade commodities, or entire collections as directed, including creating bibliographies and drafting concise research memos.
  • Assist in identifying, researching, and compiling lists of potential loan objects from external organizations within Canada and internationally.
  • Aid the curator(s) in documenting and processing incoming acquisitions pertinent to the exhibition.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s graduate or currently enrolled Master’s student specializing in art history, history, anthropology, or material culture.
  • Knowledge of Indian Ocean history or its geographic subregions is highly regarded.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and adept at utilizing computer software for research and presentation purposes.
  • Experience with Museum database systems, particularly The Museum System (TMS), is considered a valuable asset.
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal abilities, capable of fostering positive team dynamics and managing tasks efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail with the aptitude to work both independently and as part of a collaborative effort.
