Job description: The OpportunityThe Database Engineering Team within Global Technology (ETS) is looking for a self-motivated, driven, and enthusiastic team member to support the Engineering Technologies organization driving engineering transformation, reliability, and database automation. Our team provides engineering technology solutions to operational teams, cloud engineering squads and architecture across the globe. We are seeking self-motivated engineers, who are obsessed with delivering value, are forward-thinking, and excited to see the successful implementation of the products they deliver.Office location: Waterloo, ON, CanadaWork arrangement: must be Hybrid – 3 days in office, 2 days from Home (remote working arrangement is not available)Key Accountabilities:Identify and evaluate solutions to database specific system issues or opportunities to improve on current technical strategies and solutions.Collaborate with operational teams and engineering squads to provide database engineering solutions or answers to system questions.Provide automated, self-healing solutions to ensure production systems are up, monitored, and managed.Work with segment engineers to collaborate with our Architecture team realizing the strategic vision of Manulife’s database technology stackOrchestrating and automating cloud-based database platforms throughout the company.Prototype and build new database functionality to deliver on key product objectivesResearch technical strategies, third party tools, and current and new technologies to deal with emerging technical issues and improve development efficiencyReviewing current database framework to identify defects and opportunities to improve performance and stabilityEnjoying your job!Required SkillsBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology or relevant field.3-5+ years of experience in database scalable systems.Experience with database development using technologies (MS SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Mongo DB)Extensive knowledge of database coding languages such as T-SQL, PL/SQL and scripting languages – power shell, bash, az cli, pythonStrong experience migrating databases into the cloudFamiliarity with agile and DevOps principles, test-driven development, continuous integration, and other approaches to accelerate the delivery of new featuresA capacity for constant learning from both success and failure, remaining open to change and continuous improvementEvery career at Manulife/John Hancock provides the opportunity to learn new skills and move your career forward.
