Academic Upgrading within the Faculty of Liberal Studies requires a part-time professor to teach ACE Apprenticeship Math. This introductory course is designed for learners preparing for various college and apprenticeship programs and/or the workplace who wish to consolidate their basic mathematical skills and improve their problem-solving techniques. It builds on the algebraic skills mastered in previous mathematics courses, developing mathematical strategies that will provide the means to arrive at solutions in a structured, dependable way. Units of study include exponent laws; using scientific notation; factoring expressions; relations and functions; quadratic models; exponential systems; statistics and probability; personal finance; and trigonometry.IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ACADEMIC UPGRADING PART-TIME FACULTY APPLICANTS:Adults entering the upgrading program will be applying to a wide variety of skills training and postsecondary programs or they will be re-entering the workplace. The ACE Apprenticeship Math course is designed to work as an equivalent for MAP4C. This course offers information, detailed instruction, and practice in a broad range of mathematic skills equivalent to those taught in Ontario high school college level mathematics courses. Upon completion of the course, students will advance to the level required to meet workplace demands and for chosen post-secondary Technology, Apprenticeship, Skills, Business, or Health Science programs.The summer semester begins the week of May 6th, 2024. Part-time faculty teach up to 6 hours per week with varied schedules Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.The responsibilities of Durham College Part-time Professors include, but are not limited to:1. Creating a positive learning environment that accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences, and individual learning styles;2. Utilizing principles of adult education to actively engage students in the learning process;3. Effectively using educational technologies to support learning, manage and post grades, and deliver hybrid and on-line courses;4. Developing curriculum that uses appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning;5. Ensuring that course and program curriculum is current and relevant;6. Working independently and demonstrating initiative; and7. Working effectively with students, the program team, and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications: * A professional designation is an asset.
- A minimum of five years of recent (within the past three years) and relevant work experience.
- Teaching experience at the post-secondary level with a demonstrated understanding and application of UDL and current assessment methodologies.
- Experience participating in industry-led or community-based applied research is an asset.
- Demonstrated commitment to putting the student experience first.
- Demonstrated use of current technologies to support student learning and the management of grades.
- Proven track record of life-long learning.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including students, faculty, support staff, administrators and community stakeholders.
- Understanding of the Ontario college system.
