Reporting to the Editorial Director of Tundra Book Group, you will work alongside the Editorial Director of our new Indigenous imprint, as well as other members of the Tundra team. We are looking for someone located within commuting distance of our Toronto office, who will take on a wide variety of tasks. As part of the Tundra publishing division, an interest in developing editorial skills, a curiosity to learn more about the children’s book industry, and an enthusiasm to support our editorial team and creators are essential.What you’ll do:

  • Provide editorial and administrative support to the Editorial Director of Tundra’s new Indigenous imprint.
  • In consultation with senior team members, edit 3-5 titles a year, most published under the Indigenous imprint.
  • Proofread and check pages.
  • Assist the Editorial Director with acquisitions, including requesting P&Ls, preparing copy, gathering information, and drafting contract request paperwork.
  • Prepare for and support seasonal launch initiatives, such as drafting Title Information sheets, writing and proofreading launch material, and presenting books to our sales force.
  • Draft cover copy and review marketing materials.
  • Oversee project schedules for assigned books and communicate proactively with the Managing Editor to ensure each project is on track.
  • Actively participate in cover and editorial submission meetings, provide feedback, and draft reader’s reports.

Experience and knowledge you’ll bring (qualifications):

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in children’s book publishing or a related field in an editorial capacity, or equivalent experience.
  • A heightened sense of cultural competency pertaining to Indigenous groups in North America, demonstrated through enhanced knowledge, awareness, and experience with communities, culture, and history.
  • Superb copyediting and proofreading skills, with an in-depth knowledge of editing symbols and standards, and proficiency with the Chicago Manual of Style and Gregory Younging’s Elements of Indigenous Style.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, work well under pressure, and consistently meet tight deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  • Proactive and creative approach to problem solving.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work both independently and as part of a team that spans all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro (onscreen markup) and familiarity with collaborative digital tools such as Teams, Asana, Google Docs, etc.
