We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to be a key player on a fun, collegial and cooperative team, to advise on technical and strategic aspects across a wide spectrum of legal matters with a focus on providing functional leadership to Legal Counsel, Articling Students and Summer Students, whilst supporting the Director and Senior Managing Counsel, Legal Services on more significant and complex legal matters.

YOUR ROLE IN THE GAME

Reporting to the Senior Managing Counsel, Legal Services (Lottery), the Senior Legal Counsel is accountable for:

Business Management

  • Drafting and reviewing complex legal agreements, opinions, risk assessments, policies and other documents to meet business needs
  • Preparing complex contracts and collaborating with the Director and Senior Managing Counsel to ensure appropriate resolution
  • Managing the mitigation of routine commercial disputes, claims, legal reviews relating to day-to-day operational matters
  • Providing strategic legal advice and mitigating risk in all aspects of OLG’s business and escalating significant issues to the Director or Senior Managing Counsel when required, to ensure that legal issues are appropriately addressed
  • Exhibiting effective research and analysis skills in sourcing and reviewing relevant case law and providing advice to internal clients
  • Preparing materials for presentations to Senior Leadership on the matters for which they have carriage

Support and Collaboration

  • Providing support to Director or Senior Managing Counsel on larger and more significant legal matters, including independently managing significant components while leveraging support from appropriate junior resources as required
  • Collaborating and managing relationships with external counsel to ensure project success
  • Supporting the recruitment of Articling Students and Summer Students to meet hiring needs of the department

Leadership

  • Providing leadership in the development and implementation of policy to ensure appropriate legal expectations are adhered to
  • Providing functional leadership to Legal Counsel, Articling Students and Summer Students to enable performance development and to drive project success

Continuous Improvement

  • Recommending operational opportunities within the department and providing support in the implementation to drive continual business improvement

WHAT YOU NEED TO PLAY

Work experience: Minimum 5 years of experience at a large law firm or in-house counsel at a senior level for a mid-size organization; experience in at least one of the following areas: marketing law; commercial or intellectual property law experience is a bonus; experience with people management is an asset; knowledge of applicable legislation/regulations

Education: Law Degree (LLB/JD) and member in good standing with Law Society of Ontario

You are someone with: a strong business acumen and effective relationship management skills; excellent oral, written and drafting communication skills; excellent problem solving and strategic thinking ability; strong research and interpretation skills; superior leadership and coaching capability, very detail oriented
