  • Perform structural analysis and calculations for building components, including foundations, slabs, beams, columns, and lateral systems.
  • Assist in developing framing schemes and structural systems in collaboration with senior engineers.
  • Work with a variety of materials including concrete, steel, masonry and wood.
  • Contribute to the preparation and coordination of engineering drawings and specifications in collaboration with BIM technologists and project consultants.
  • Support design coordination by reviewing architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings.
  • Participate in site visits and construction field reviews under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Assist with the development of reports, technical memos, and project correspondence.

RequirementsWhat do you need to succeed?

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Interest in building design and a desire to learn through hands-on project experience.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, SAFE, RAM) and design tools such as Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Knowledge or interest in sustainable design and embodied carbon is considered an asset.
  • Previous co-op or internship experience in building design is an asset but not required.

  • You will have technical accountability on all aspects of design for medium and high voltage (5kV – 735kV) substation projects including the development of:
  • General Arrangements, Plan Views and Elevation Views, Grounding Plans, Cable Trough/Conduit Plans, Specifications for Major Primary Equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, etc.), Documentation for Design Calculations, Bill of Materials, Construction Sequencing Documentation;
  • Perform the following studies: Grounding, Lightning, Bus Fault Stress Analysis.

  • You will work seamlessly with Physical Lead to develop the above listed drawings;

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Between 3 to 6 years of relevant post education experience in the field of high voltage substation design – Physical, ideally within a consulting environment;
  • PEO – should be working towards registration to obtain P.Eng;
  • Experience with all voltages 735 kV and below;
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation;
  • Proficient in the use of CDEGS, WinIGS, or similar programs for lightning and grounding studies.
  • Proficient in assessing mechanical forces and thermal effects of high fault currents on rigid bus
  • Ability to write up the scope, perform QA/QC, and manage the direct reports
  • Experience with proposal writing and project estimating
  • Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls processes.
  • Good knowledge of the industry and technology trends specific to substations.
  • Strong familiarity with the NEC and National Electrical Safety Code
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
