Your responsibilities will include conducting research, photographing artifacts, and cataloging new acquisitions. You’ll also play a crucial role in the reorganization and enhancement of the Mackay Collection. You’ll be able to contribute to various collection-based projects, including the prestigious George Cross and David Gray collections, broadening your experience and impact within our institution.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the curator to update records of Chinese artifacts in the museum’s database, guaranteeing compliance with our rigorous data standards.
  • Undertake research on selected pieces from the Chinese collection and, as needed, from the Japanese collection, following specific directives.
  • Work closely with the curator and collection specialist on cataloging and conducting research within the Mackay collection of Chinese artifacts.
  • Photograph Chinese and Japanese objects not yet documented in the museum’s database, contributing to a more comprehensive digital archive.
  • Support the collection specialist in carefully rehousing artifacts within the Chinese Collection, ensuring their preservation and accessibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • We welcome applications from senior undergraduates, recent university graduates, and current graduate students.
  • A background or keen interest in Chinese and Japanese languages, art history, or general history is highly desirable.
  • Preferred candidates will have knowledge of and experience with carefully handling artwork and the techniques involved in photographing objects.
  • Experience with or understanding collection database software and adherence to database standards will be considered valuable.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities, alongside strong interpersonal and research skills.
  • A meticulous eye for detail and high proficiency in computer skills are essential.
