Job description: About the TeamThe L&H Modelling Centre of Excellence (MCoE) is a large global team, responsible for creating and understanding the AXIS actuarial models and supporting tools relied on by hundreds of actuaries responsible for financial reporting and business steering across all Swiss Re L&H Reinsurance locations (US, Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia). Interns will be involved in a diverse array of challenging actuarial projects and internship program activities. Please note this internship will be in our Toronto office.Program highlights include:

  • Product Training: You will be trained in Pacific Life’s Retirement Solutions and Life Insurance products to ensure you start your summer internship with a high-level understanding of what we offer to our customers.
  • Mentorship: You will be assigned an Executive mentor who will meet with you to discuss their knowledge and experience and provide you with guidance on your internship and career path.
  • Hands On Experience: You will be participating in actuarial projects that will give you a true understanding of the profession. The projects you will work on will contribute to your teams’ and company goals. Examples of projects include: Creating dashboards to visualize data, Automating processes and calculations, Rider Analysis, Cash Flow Analysis, and Creating tools for efficiency.
  • Rotational Events: You will be invited to a series of interactive presentations in which key actuaries throughout the company will provide an overview of their department and job duties as well as their experiences as an actuary. This will include exposure to Modeling, Risk Management, Product Design, Pricing, Valuation, and more.
  • Social Activities: Networking opportunities, Executive speaker series, community service events, and social outings.

Factors for Success

  • Completion of at least 1 Society of Actuaries exam is required.
  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree majoring in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or Actuarial Science.
  • Ability to problem solve and demonstrate leadership.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.
  • Desire to gain more experience in the actuarial field.

  • Involvement in actuarial valuations for funding purposes for pension plans;
  • Involvement in actuarial valuations for accounting purposes;
  • Involvement in the preparation of actuarial costings and projections;
  • Provide routine technical and analytical support to ensure the continuous efficient operation of our clients’ pension plan arrangements;
  • Read and interpret pension plan texts;
  • Year-end update of plan records, including the reconciliation of the membership, contributions and trust fund;
  • Completing government filings with pension regulators;
  • Calculate benefit entitlements and prepare option packages on retirement, termination, death and marriage breakdown;
  • Participating in internal seminars regarding current industry issues and technical training; and
  • Working with a variety of Excel-based actuarial tools.

Skills and experience that will lead to success

  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to work in a team environment;
  • Thorough and good organizational skills;
  • Good knowledge of Excel and Word; and
  • Previous work experience or actuarial co-op experience in a consulting/insurance environment is an asset.

Education:

  • Students should be enrolled in Actuarial Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics or Business Administration; and
  • Applicants should preferably be in 2nd work term or above.
