With our combined team of over 7,200 globally, we focus on enabling innovation through the services we deliver, while actively looking for new opportunities that will enable innovation for our clients’ businesses.Through our shared values, we focus on building a sustainable future, diversity and belonging, and providing continuous learning and development.Summer Intern – Health, Safety and EnvironmentSUMMARYThe Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Intern will be an integral part, assisting in the development, implementation and maintenance of internal processes that support the HSE management system as well as external clients.Contract dates: May-August 2025Work arrangement: hybrid, remote and on-site at our Markham head officeKEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports the development, implementation and maintenance of the HSE management system that is aligned to but not limited to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and Certificate of Recognition (COR).
- Assists in the mitigation and management of HSE risks (e.g. regulatory review, audits, etc.)
- Assists in the processing, tracking, recording and reporting of accident and incident data (e.g. total reportable injury rate, lost time injury rate, etc.)
- Monitors key performance indicators and compiles reports of HSE performance
- Coordinates the revitalization of internal communication tool: SharePoint. This includes but is not limited to the redesigning, implementing and ongoing maintenance of the intranet site.
- Assists in the development and distribution of HSE communication to internal team members
- Support the development and execution of HSE training programs as required
- Monitors and tracks changes and updates in HSE legislation in Canada and USA
- Conducts field inspections/job observations; HSE audits and other types of reviews to monitor compliance to HSE requirements and to identify opportunities for improvement
- Communicates observations, non-compliance and risks to stakeholders, and provides and implements corrective and preventative measures to ensure compliance and mitigate risks
- Assists in the tracking and completion of audit findings and other action items/deliverables
- Investigates and resolves incidents as required
- Conducts root-cause analysis, identifies incident causes, and implements corrective and preventative measures
- Reviews and implements modifications to work plans, processes, procedures to reduce recurring incidents and improve HSE performance
- Monitors and assesses current processes to look for efficiencies and continuously improve the management system
- Help develop safety communications for company-wide newsletter
Knowledge & Skills
- Currently enrolled in university or college in one of the following or relevant programs – Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Certificate in Environmental Management through a College or University degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences
- Knowledge of health, safety and environment regulatory requirements in Canada and/or US at a federal and/or provincial/state level
- Knowledge of health, safety and environment management systems – ISO 14001, CSA Z1000, OHSAS 18001, Certificate of Recognition (COR), etc.
- Strong verbal, written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required
- Advanced computer skills on MS Office especially with Excel and SharePoint (e.g. pivot tables, macros, etc.)
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to deliver health, safety and environment-related training
- Ability to investigate and resolve health, safety and environment incidents, conduct root cause analysis skills along with preventative and corrective measure implementation
Not required but should be eligible for
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional from Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals or
- Certified Health & Safety Consultant from Canadian Society of Safety Engineering or
- Certified Environmental Professional (EP or CEP)
