Under the expert guidance of ROM Senior Curator of Global Fashion & Textiles, Dr. Sarah Fee, you will collaborate closely with our team of curators and collections specialists. This unique opportunity will involve you in the comprehensive inventory of ROM’s African textiles collection, aiming to enhance its visibility through the museum’s online eMuseum platform. Your contributions will include researching, cataloging, and photographing each piece to create detailed descriptions and visual records. In addition to these tasks, you will manage associated files and engage with database operations to ensure the collection’s information is accurately and effectively shared. This internship offers a blend of hands-on experience in museum collection management, digital engagement, and the opportunity to contribute significantly to the appreciation and understanding of African textiles.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Curator(s) by updating and enriching the cataloging information for the African textiles collection at the ROM.
  • Aid the Collections Specialist in capturing high-quality photographs of textiles and managing the corresponding digital files efficiently.
  • Facilitate comprehensive file management and ensure the timely update of information in the Museum’s database system (TMS).
  • Collaborate with the curator(s) in meticulously documenting and processing newly acquired pieces for the collection.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Art History, Anthropology, Material Culture, or History.
  • Must have an understanding of handwoven textile techniques. Knowledge or familiarity with African textiles is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with collection database software and database standards will be considered an advantage.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and research skills are required. A strong attention to detail and good computer skills are essential for success in this role.
