The Community Arts Coordinator will work within the Community Dance Department at Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) to support the planning, implementation and evaluation of key special projects.The employee will contribute series of summer initiatives with a focus on NBS’ LEAD (Leadership, Empowerment, Action, Dance) National Summit. This free week-long event, led by professional artists and community mentors, engages participants aged 16-25, who identify as women, non-binary, two-spirit, genderqueer etc., to take on leadership roles in their community. The primary goals of LEAD are to empower participants to recognize and value their leadership potential; provide access to artistic and community role models with lived experience of racialization and/or marginalization; and build a mentorship network that supports community action. The program engages youth from across Canada including rural and remote locations.Other special projects will support the delivery of Sharing Dance Older Adults, a program that provides older adults, a group highly susceptible to social isolation, with opportunities to for inclusive physical activity that fosters a sense of belonging. With seated and standing demonstration, the program is accessible to older adults living in community and in care, including those with mild to moderate physical and/or cognitive challenges.In addition to administration and support work within Community Dance, the role will also include collaborative projects with other NBS departments including Recreational Ballet and Brand Engagement. The employee will report to the Director Community Dance Programs and work directly with individual program managers. The position functions within a fast-paced, creative office environment and will encompass a wide range of duties from administrative to program implementation support.Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day activities of the Community Dance Department, including engaging with and creating a welcoming environment for a broad range of participants
  • Assist with planning and execution of NBS Community Dance summer programming (i.e., event coordination, program support and set-up, etc.). Programming events may include NBS’ LEAD National Summit, Sharing Dance Older Adult classes and Adaptive Dance Program Summer Camp.
  • Support departmental communications and generate reports as required
  • Aid with records maintenance; support data collection/entry related to program evaluation and reporting
  • Aid in collaborative projects with other NBS departments including the Young Dancers Program and Brand Engagement

Qualifications/Skills/Experience

  • High School or Post-secondary education
  • Passion for equitable and inclusive practices in dance
  • Experience or interest in working with children/youth or other vulnerable populations (i.e. Older Adults)
  • Experience as a dancer and/or dance teacher – please note all dance forms and styles ( i.e., Afro-Caribbean, Powwow, Contemporary) are welcomed and considered an asset
  • Strong customer service, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
