Let’s Create Possible, one learner at a time.About This RoleNelson Education is seeking a skilled Copyeditor/Proofreader to join our team, reporting to the Senior Manager, Content Management. This role requires strong copyediting and proofreading experience, with familiarity in the Chicago Manual of Style a plus. The successful candidate will also handle accessibility tasks, including proofreading closed captions and editing alt text and visual descriptions. We’re looking for a detail-oriented, organized individual with excellent language skills and a focus on the user experience. The role offers a range of responsibilities, from simple to complex tasks.Key AccountabilitiesCopyediting and Proofreading
- Copyedit content to ensure content is complete, that correct editorial and formatting styles are applied, and content meets accessibility best practices.
- Proofreading (copy-to-copy checks) to ensure manuscript fidelity and changes are made correctly.
- Copyedit metadata, applying standard Nelson and Edwin style guides and project-specific style where applicable.
- Provide editorial leadership and guidance to the broader editorial and Content Services team by contributing to and making decisions pertaining to style guides.
Copyediting and/or Writing for Accessibility
- Edit and/or write alt text and visual descriptions for images and interactives.
- Proofread closed captions, ensuring consistency with the video’s audio, correct spelling and style are used, and with an editorial eye toward accessibility best practices.
- Participate in accessibility meetings to develop and contribute to editorial accessibility standards.
Other duties and responsibilities
- Ensure that Project Managers and other team members are regularly updated on project status. This requires participation in planning or update meetings, and accurate maintenance of data in editorial report systems.
- Foster effective and efficient communication among team members.
RequirementsMust-have:
- At least two years’ experience as a copyeditor or proofreader.
- Experience editing for digital platforms.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly organized and motivated, detail-oriented, with effective problem-solving skills and strong customer service orientation.
- Superior time management skills, the flexibility to shift between tasks easily, and the demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize workload.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
- Proficiency in various software such as Microsoft Office, Teams, and Outlook; Adobe Acrobat; Jira and Confluence; and Smartsheet.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to change, willingness to learn new technology and skills, and willingness to accept feedback to improve and hone editorial skills.
Nice to have:
- Bilingual: French is an asset.
- Experience in educational publishing.
- Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Copyeditor accreditation or certificate/degree from post-secondary publishing program an asset.
- Experience writing and editing closed captions, alt text, and visual descriptions an asset.
