The Leacross Foundation Internship Program is for a summer internship at ROM for female-identifying students, representing a partnership that will build and strengthen the careers of undergraduate scholars while advancing ROM’s position as a premier Canadian research institution. There will be a cohort of five interns, one in Biodiversity, one in Earth and Space (including Climate Change), Fossils, Art & Culture, and Collections Care. These interns will meet throughout the summer to learn more about the ROM and the different collections and initiatives.The Leacross Foundation seeks a motivated individual for the Internship in Collections Care. This position involves collaboration across various Natural History disciplines, focusing on the processing and archiving documents and other historical materials to ensure their preservation for future use in the ROM archives. Each collection area within Natural History is supported by its own archive.The key responsibilities include conducting a comprehensive inventory of all the Department of Natural History archival materials. In collaboration with the ROM archivist, the intern will assess the historical significance of these materials to identify items that should be permanently preserved in the ROM archive. Additionally, the intern will process materials by classifying, cataloging, and indexing them by established archival practices.
The intern will be able to engage with other Leacross Foundation interns to gain insights into different areas of the institution beyond Natural History. They will be encouraged to share their projects with fellow interns.HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Work closely with Curators, Collections Technicians and Collections Specialists identifying any archival material in each area.
  • In conjunction with the ROM archivist, evaluate the historical significance of materials to determine which items should be permanently preserved in the archive.
  • Organizing materials by classifying, cataloging, and indexing them according to established archival practices
  • Creating metadata for each item, including information about its content, creator, date, and context.
  • Implement the appropriate preservation and storage for varying materials.
  • Provides quality control, ensuring the integrity, consistency and sharing of the organization’s centralized data resources and digital assets.
  • Engage with the other Leacross Interns within the institution to learn about their projects and other areas within the institution.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary Museum Studies or Library Sciences program OR an acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in object handling and archives, particularly with an aptitude for independent and collaborative work and strong attention to detail, is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) would be an asset.

  • Carefully unpack newly acquired fossil samples while preserving their original collecting integrity and associated metadata.

  • Accurately enter data in The Museum System (TMS) collection database, flagging inconsistencies.

The Earth and Space section within the Department of Natural History maintains a large and constantly growing collection of rare meteorites. Meteorites are crucial to our understanding of the formation of the Solar System. They are the only large, solid material remaining that records, in any detail, the first few tens of millions of years of the Solar System’s birth 4.5 billion years ago. Meteorites are also the samples used to design much of the research instrumentation on robotic missions sent to study asteroidal and planetary bodies, such as the Mars rovers and the OSIRIS-REx mission. Studying the mineralogy of meteorites is also critical in understanding the Earth’s formation. Since we cannot directly sample minerals from deep within the Earth, meteorites from asteroids provide samples of rocky proto-planets, some of which had differentiated iron cores similar to that of our Earth.HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Prepare detailed sample descriptions of meteorites, including weight, size, and macroscopic observations.
  • Work closely with Curators, Collections Technicians, and Collections Specialists to adhere to a schedule for processing multiple samples while maintaining the ability to work independently once guidance has been provided.
  • Assist in the preparation of meteorites for analysis, including cutting samples using a high-precision, low-loss wire saw, polishing, and creating sample mounts.
  • Conduct petrographic work using a microscope to examine the mineralogical composition of meteorites and select analysis targets.
  • Utilize Raman spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) as required to characterize meteorites.
  • Learn and apply meteorite characterization schemes, including petrographic grade, weathering grade, and shock state.
  • Maintain accurate records, including photographic, digital, and hard copy documentation of rare samples.
  • Collect and analyze scientific data to classify undescribed meteorites and determine meteorite type.
  • Assist in compiling data and writing a small report on meteorite findings for submission to The Meteoritical Society: International Society for Meteoritics and Planetary Science.
  • Participate in public outreach events as needed, sharing knowledge with diverse audiences.
  • Engage with other Leacross Interns to gain insight into different projects and areas within the institution.

WHAT YOU BRING

The Leacross Foundation Internship Program is for a summer internship at ROM for female-identifying students, representing a partnership that will build and strengthen the careers of undergraduate scholars while advancing ROM’s position as a premier Canadian research institution. There will be a cohort of five interns, one in Biodiversity, one in Earth and Space (including Climate Change); Fossils; Art & Culture; and Collections Care, and these interns will meet throughout the summer to learn more about the ROM and the different collections and initiatives going on.For the Leacross Foundation Internship in Biodiversity, we are looking for a dynamic individual who could work in several disciplines within the Department of Natural History, notably Plants, Fungi, Insects and Arachnids and Fishes for which the digitization of the collections is far from complete. In 2024, ROM DNH was awarded Young Canada Works funding for a unique digitization initiative. A summer student imaged Natural History specimens and labels so that they could be uploaded to the online Crowd Sourcing Platform Notes for Nature, and their data was transcribed by volunteers, which were subsequently incorporated into our TMS Database. The 2024 Crowd Sourcing Project was a pilot project for standardizing imaging equipment, software and protocols for photographing Natural History specimens (see attached document). The learnings from this project have been used to perfect protocols, set up two permanent imaging stations, and make a third in dedicated spaces. They are now fully operational and are for use by staff, students, and volunteers.HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Digitize specimens and labels within the Biodiversity sections, including Plants, Fungi, Insects, Arachnids, and Fishes, where digitization is incomplete.
  • Upload digitized images to the Notes for Nature online crowd-sourcing platform for volunteer transcription.
  • Incorporate transcribed data from Notes for Nature into the museum’s TMS Collections Database to enhance collection accessibility.
  • Work closely with Curators, Collections Technicians, and Collections Specialists across Biodiversity collections, following a structured schedule while maintaining the ability to work independently once guidance has been provided.
  • Follow established protocols to create metadata for digitized images.
  • Ensure quality control of metadata capture, maintaining the integrity, consistency, and accessibility of the organization’s centralized digital assets.
  • Maintain accurate photographic, digital, and hard copy records of Natural History and Biodiversity collections for crowd-sourcing and databasing.
  • Participate in collection management techniques, including specimen care, handling, conservation, barcoding, and accessioning, ensuring image names and numbers correspond correctly to specimens.
  • Review and apply evolving digital photography standards and best practices for specimen imaging.
  • Participate in public outreach events as needed, engaging with visitors and sharing insights about the project.
  • Collaborate with other Leacross Interns to learn about their projects and different areas of the institution.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Completion of at least two (2) years of post-secondary training/education in a Biodiversity discipline, such as entomology, mycology, botany or ichthyology OR an acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling objects and/or imaging samples, particularly with an aptitude for independent and collaborative work, showing a strong attention to detail, is a valuable asset.
  • Familiarity with Digital SLR cameras, lights, Adobe Bridge, Photoshop, and Capture One software would be an asset.
