Job date: Sun, 22 Sep 2024 22:55:02 GMT

Job description: Searching for a live-in companion/caregiver for our mom (two brothers and I). She’s a boomer-aged retiree, diagnosed with dementia a few years ago. At the moment she has two part-time companions assisting her for approximately 20-25 hour/week. She lives in a modern 2 story, 3-bedroom townhouse with a finished basement. The basement is completely unoccupied at the moment and could be set up as a private dwelling for someone to utilize. It has a full washroom and easy access to laundry. We are seeking someone to live with Mom to provide some general oversight of not only her, but the household itself. Organizing all the regular household tasks has become overwhelming for her, i.e. cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning, remembering to put garbage/recycling out, remembering to eat and administer medication etc. To be clear, mom can manage some of her day-to-day activities moderately on her own but does benefit from guidance as she gets off track from time to time. Additionally, Mom no longer has a valid driver’s license, so transportation to and from her home to run errands, attend appointments, or visit friends is beneficial. As mom’s condition changes, so too may the requirements. Flexibility, willingness to adapt/improvise and patience will all be key attributes required for this role. Our goal is to keep Mom comfortable and safe in her home as long as we can. We feel strongly that having someone in her home daily will provide the much-needed social stimulation that she lacks living on her own. Most importantly, knowing someone is there during the nights with her in case she has an emergency, really will give us a sense of relief. NOTE: Currently, mom has no needs for assistance with toileting or personal care. We welcome a conversation with any interested candidates, please don’t hesitate to call me directly. Requirements: 1) Valid Ontario Drivers License & “reasonably” clean drivers abstract 2) Up to date Police check 3) Experience interacting with Alzheimers and Dementia patients (or other types of cognitive impairment) 4) Reliability, compassion, and outstanding interpersonal skills. 5) Healthcare, social work, or other relevant training/experience is a bonus. Compensation: We will discuss compensation and reimbursement for transportation services with any candidates selected for interviews. As noted, we have other caregivers actively assisting Mom, so we can be flexible with how we structure an arrangement if a candidate had the desire to maintain an existing job during the day. NOTE: My brothers and I are all located within 10 minutes of my mom.
