Job description: CNL is seeking a Waste Characterization Specialist for a vacancy in Chalk River, ON .Within CNL, Environmental Engineers are referred to as Waste Characterization Specialists. The purpose of this position is to determine the characterization needs of a facility to undergo decommissioning. Characterization of a facility identifies the radiological and industrial hazard associated with a facility to be decommissioned in order prepare detailed work plans and identify the required waste paths.What you will be doing!The general accountabilities associated with this position are as follows:

  • Perform historical reviews and gap analyses to determine characterization needs of a facility
  • Perform field walk downs to define scopes of work
  • Prepare characterization documents; scoping survey plans, characterization plans and sampling work plans using the Integrated Work Control Process
  • Provide input for the development of schedules of characterization activities to align with project milestones set out in the APWB
  • Coordinate and monitor field activities with various service groups: IH, RP, Trades, WMO, etc.
  • Arrange for sample shipment and analysis with internal and external analytical chemistry laboratories
  • Review survey results and sample analysis results
  • Prepare characterization reports
  • Train and mentor facility staff in all areas of characterization;
  • Liaise with CNL support group personnel and external contractors providing characterization services;

What we are seeking!Knowledge and Skills:

  • Honour’s Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing or, membership in an Engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a nuclear operational or Decommissioning environment.
  • Knowledge and application of Radiation Protection principles, measurements and contamination control. A minimum of Group 3 certification is required.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Graduation from a recognized educational institution in computer science, computer technician, data networking. OR
  • Graduation from an equivalent formal educational program and relevant IT experience.
  • Experience
  • Five (5) of more years of prior experience in an IT Infrastructure Analyst or similar role to gain design-related expertise with IT Infrastructure technologies.
  • Architecture-specific certifications are desirable, such as Microsoft MCSE, Red Hat RHCE, SNIA SNCP, etc.

Location :CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible.   • Using master-slave manipulators, operating in-cell equipment including hand tools, power tools, measurement devices and process equipment.
  • Performing radioactive material flask handling and transfer operations, as well as routine maintenance on on-site transfer flasks.
  • Performing all operations of Hot Cells within the limits imposed by the Facility Authorization, and as defined in other operations documentation.
  • Assisting in providing technical support for the maintenance of all hot cell systems.
  • Being responsible for the safe, proper and efficient operation of all in-cell and out-of-cell PIE equipment.
  • Being familiar with the appropriate methods and precautions required for handling radioactive materials.
  • Carrying out or assisting in designing, constructing, repairing, testing, evaluating, and operational developing specialized PIE equipment.
  • Being cross-trained in several processes competently.
  • Preparing records, procedures, memoranda and reports.
  • Performing other related duties appropriate to the assigned level.
  • Carrying out other operational duties as required.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as a specialization in metallography, materials sciences, material testing, engineering, or related discipline or equivalent formal education OR Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
  • One (1) to three (3) years of pertinent technological experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching metal specimens.
  • Experience utilizing optical microscopes.
  • Experience performing hands-on work that requires a high level of manual dexterity and depth perception, such as working with master-slave manipulators or remote-controlled equipment, is considered an asset.
  • Experience using image analysis software and knowledge in the use of computers to produce facility logs, reports, inventory records, commissioning procedures, operating procedures and maintenance procedures.

  • Must pass a manipulator test.
  • Must be mechanically inclined, comfortable performing hands-on work and experienced working with hand tools, power tools, measurement devices and process equipment.
  • Must demonstrate excellent manual dexterity.
  • Must have broad training or educational qualifications specific to the job duties; be willing to obtain or attend further job-related training and accreditation.
  • Must possess good judgment and communication skills [oral and written].
  • Must possess a high sense of individual responsibility.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other forms of protective equipment and clothing for unspecified periods of time.
  • Possess skills in operating pumps, valves, fans, compressors, hoists, lift trucks, overhead cranes (up to 30-ton capacity), rig slings and lifting tackle are considered assets.
  • General knowledge of metallurgy, materials degradation phenomena, and failure analysis.
  • General knowledge of zirconium alloys would be beneficial.
  • Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or hazardous conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member and to respond to challenging schedule demands.
  • Direct experience in a nuclear environment would be an asset.
  • Knowledge acquired through formal training or on-the-job experience in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machining, Electronics, Radiation Protection, or certification in a skilled technical trade would be an asset.
  • Strong math skills are required to ensure accuracy with Nuclear Accounting.
  • Reliability and attendance records of applicants will be scrutinized and considered in this competition.
  • Working knowledge of metallurgical techniques, microscopic imaging and macroscopic imaging.
  • Hot cell manipulator operation is considered an asset.
  • Hoisting and rigging, flask transfers, transporting dangerous goods, and hot cell operation are considered assets.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Level 2 Secret with SASC requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom.
