Job Description:
Reporting to the Supervisor Print Production, this role will involve setting up, operating and maintaining multi-coloured large format and single-coloured (small-format) offset printing presses and related equipment for the production of City printing.
Major Responsibilities:
Sets up and operates large format offset printing press and related equipment by checking and monitoring print runs, replacing rubber blankets, mounting and fitting plates on cylinders, loading paper on feeders, setting up feeders, using press console control keys to regulate dampening unit and inkflow. * Produces printed materials on paper using metal plates. Receives and reviews job dockets, mixes inks using colour matching system or by eye and mixes fountain solutions. Checks test prints for colour overlap and fit and makes adjustments to match approved print proofs before initiating production.
- Monitors printing process for quality and accuracy. Makes adjustments.
- Maintains and cleans equipment by greasing and oiling and using chemicals and additives. Performs repairs, replaces and orders parts and accessories, initiates service requests.
- Preserves and files metal plates, washes up ink and water rollers and cleans cylinders using chemicals.
- Completes information on work orders and fills out production work sheets both manually and digital on computer.
- Performs proofing, platemaking, stock cutting duties.
- Moves skids of paper from loading dock to shop.
- Stocks materials and supplies.
- Maintains work area and tools.
- Records time and materials for each job in electronic docketing system.
- Provides work direction and guides the work of the Large Format Press Feeder.
- Works and performs duties in a healthy and safe manner following all applicable Health & Safety Policies and Guidelines.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to: * Extensive experience operating and maintaining large format, multi-colour offset printing presses larger than 28″ (i.e.: Heidelberg CD74 and/or KBA Rapida 105).
- Extensive experience with the lithographic ink colour management process, including 4 colour process [Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y), Black (K)] as well as Pantone colours and how it is used to produce and match colour print images on paper.
- Considerable experience with paper types and weights, as well as paper grain directions, and the handling of large size paper (up to 28” x 40” sheets), including jogging, slip sheeting, stacking and piling.
- Extensive experience handling inks including mixing, weighing and loading ink fountains.
- Considerable experience handling offset press-dampening systems including mixing and weighing press chemistry and managing the press dampening fountains.
- Considerable experience performing daily maintenance, minor repairs and adjustments to printing presses and bindery equipment.
You must also have:
- Knowledge of inventory management functions and processes as they apply to a print production environment (inks, papers and pressroom supplies).
- Knowledge of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification chain-of-custody requirements as it relates to the print industry.
- Ability to use computers and various software applications including MS Office (Word, Excel), in addition to a workflow print management information system (e.g., Avanti).
- Ability to lift awkward materials and boxes weighing approximately 50lbs.
- Ability to work in tight places e.g., between press units for hanging plates and wash ups.
- Service oriented focus: well developed customer service, analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Good communication skills, both written and oral.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations to this role.
- Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with other staff, elected officials and members of the public.
- An ability to work independently as required.
- Ability to handle various hazardous chemicals safely.
- Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity, and respectful workplaces.
- Certification in WHMIS would be considered an asset.
