We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.The OpportunityThe Advisor, Communications will have an eye for storytelling and will be responsible for working collaboratively with many functions across the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to develop strategic communications plans and support executive speech writing.This role supports the Supervisor, Strategic Communications and Editorial Services in the various accountabilities of the department, including communication strategies, public affairs and the overall management of corporate relations.We are looking for a strong, versatile writer who can bring creativity and communications acumen to the electricity industry by joining the IESO’s Communications team. You have the ability to see issues from different audience perspectives and communicate clearly and concisely across various channels, including speeches, news releases, social media posts and web content.While teasing out a newsworthy story is important, you also have the ability to dive into the details to ensure content accuracy. In a typical week, you could be working on an array of electricity sector and business topics, including: power system operations, emerging technologies, energy efficiency, electrification, cybersecurity, and stakeholder and community engagement.A resourceful and quick learner will thrive on the IESO team, supported by communications colleagues and subject matter experts across the organization who are eager to share their time, knowledge, and experience.Now more than ever, the IESO needs professionals who are agile, embrace innovation, and thrive in a collaborative environment built on shared values and a powerful purpose.The role will be located at Adelaide (Toronto) with an expectation of occasional time spent at Clarkson (Mississauga).Job OverviewThe Advisor, Communications is involved in the design and implementation of strategic communication plans, including the coordination, drafting and execution of speeches and presentations, media and issues management, social media, and web content.What You’ll Be Doing1. Assist the Supervisor, Strategic Communications and Editorial Services in administering policies and giving advice that cover the broad field of marketing/communications activities, including public affairs, and corporate relations.2. Initiate, design and implement strategic communication plans, including developing social media, speeches, presentations decks, preparing letters, articles, email campaigns and web content for customers, the energy sector and the public.3. Support the media and issues management function by monitoring news and developments to anticipate issues; research and prepare Q&As; develop and execute media outreach campaigns including writing news releases. Respond to written or oral requests for information from the public, media, key stakeholders and employees and in response to articles or public statements by these groups as required within specified tight time frames.4. Support the IESO’s social media program by developing content ensuring its engaging and aligns with overall strategic direction of communications and the organization.5. Identify to the Supervisor, issues arising or likely to arise from the public, customers, media, key stakeholders or within the Corporation and recommend immediate, short and medium-term strategies, communication, actions and programs for addressing such issues with specific audiences. Helping ensure public considerations are appropriately factored into Corporate decision-making processes.6. Assist senior communication staff in administering policies and giving advice that cover the broad field of marketing/communications activities, public affairs, and corporate relations.7. Maintain an in-depth understanding of plans, activities and issues in key areas of the Organization and their potential impact on the Organization’s relationships with its public.8. Maintain awareness of latest public communication techniques and key stakeholder and public policy trends developing or being used outside the organization.9. Provide periodic, limited supervision over others designated to assist on certain projects/work programs.10. Perform other duties as required.What You Need to Succeed
- A bachelors’ degree in journalism, communication or similar program from a recognized institution plus at least six to eight years of relevant experience.
- Versatile and flexible communicator, with experience and expertise in writing for traditional and digital platforms – familiar with Canadian Press Style.
- Proven ability to translate technical and/or specialized material and terminology into language that is appropriate for various audiences.
- Requires experience in gathering, researching and preparing communications materials for various audiences.
- Great interpersonal skills to maintain relationships with stakeholders.
- A demonstrated ability to excel in a fast-paced environment with ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and manage competing priorities.
- Experience with development of strategic communications documents, including communication plans, speeches, memos, letters, key messages, briefing notes, backgrounds and FAQs.
