We are always on the lookout for talented individuals to join our team.The Opportunity:Working in the Sault Star newsroom, the ideal candidate is an enterprising self-starter and team player with a sense for stories that resonate with Sault Ste. Marie’s diverse readership. The candidate should be able to cultivate sources, find stories buried in documents and break news on tight deadlines while writing in a way that is clear, concise and engaging. Knowledge of Northern Ontario, Indigenous issues, business, municipal politics, immigration, sports, including the Ontario Hockey League, and general news are assets. The successful candidate will spend 50 per cent of their time on general news, especially covering business stories and news features that lend themselves to Postmedia’s long-read format. The rest of their time will be spent covering local sports, especially the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL, and they will be expected to file stories and features suitable for Postmedia’s OHL newsletter. In addition, the successful candidate will help lead the way as the Sault newsroom adopts new storytelling and web tools, such as long-story features, Explainers and blogs using Viafora.What you’ll do:

  • Reporting and writing stories for print, web and mobile audiences – as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of those platforms.

Initiating and developing ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.Cultivating sources and establishing expertise in order to break stories and set the news agenda.Cultivating sources and establishing expertise in order to break stories and set the news.Filing video clips for digital platforms; working with digital teams to create interactive maps and graphics, searchable databases, and other multimedia elements.Who you are

  • You have 1+ years of newsroom experience.
  • Flexibility to write effectively in breaking news, features and short form is essential.
  • Background knowledge of business is helpful. More important is having the drive and ability to dig deep, to get answers and to be able to see story angles in numbers.
  • You need an ability to identify trends and drivers behind the news that allows you to explain why and how, as well as what is happening.
  • A talent for explanatory journalism is a must. Politics, business and sports are full of jargon: You need to be able to translate it for expert and novice readers alike.
  • Being strong with data analysis is an asset.
  • Experience and strength in video or podcast presentation is an asset.
