What This Position Is About:
The Director, Marketing, Recruitment & Communications is responsible for providing overall leadership and strategic direction for the Marketing, Recruitment and Communications functions of the organization.

The incumbent’s sphere of accountability includes brand management, marketing, student recruitment, media relations, social media, Fleming College’s external website and overall online presence, internal communications, and college publications. These activities directly support Fleming College’s objectives in brand positioning, enrolment growth, enterprise growth, community profile and student and staff engagement.

This individual will be responsible for mentoring and leading a highly effective team with diverse skill sets.

Strategic thinking and issues management skills are critical to this position to guide and influence the strategic messages of the college that are broadcast to multiple stakeholders and to provide communications leadership during unusual and/or crisis situations.

Reporting to the Vice President, Community and Economic Development, the incumbent works with the Vice President, other members of the Senior Management Team, Academic leaders, and the Strategic Enrolment Management team to provide professional expertise, planning and advice in dealing with critical communication issues and in developing integrated communications, marketing and public relations strategies that support the achievement of enrolment targets and the overall goals of the college. The incumbent will consult and collaborate with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure all programs and initiatives are effectively marketed and communicated.

What We Are Looking For:

  • 4-Year degree in marketing, communication, business, or a related field; Master’s preferred
  • Courses or certifications in digital marketing, social media platforms and CRM (customer relationship management).
  • 9 years of progressively responsible, directly related experience
  • Proven strategic sales and marketing planning skills.
  • Progressive leadership experience in strategic communications.
  • Demonstrated experience in building a brand and increasing the profile of an organization is essential. This includes expertise in strategic marketing, marketing research management, and strategic communications planning.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build effective relationships with diverse stakeholder groups including government, donors, the media and senior level stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills including strong presentation skills, writing, media relations and public speaking skills, as well as sound judgment and political acumen.
  • Knowledge and experience with social media and web-based marketing and information dissemination and knowledge of industry leading software and trends.
  • Demonstrated experience as a project manager in marketing or public relations service setting, publications and advertising experience, superior listening skills, analysis and problem-solving skills, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Strong research, writing and editing skills.
  • Strong planning, financial, project and human resources management experience is essential.
  • Knowledge of industry standards regarding design principles and copywriting.

Responsible to the Director of the Leader’s Secretariat for:

  • Social Media
  • Assist with the preparation of high-quality, accurate, proof-read social media content on behalf of the Leader’s Secretariat and Caucus.
  • Assist with developing overall look and feel goals of the Leader’s Secretariat.
  • Help manage competing demands ensure they are achieved.
  • Monitor and adapt to evolving social media best practices.
  • Assist with creatively and strategically shooting video and still footage.
  • Edit video and still footage as directed for distribution across various platforms.
  • Working closely with other departments – Digital, Communications, Community Engagement and Issues Management – to ensure social media posts are timely, appropriate and in line with NDP policy and the message box of the day.
  • Have key posts reviewed and approved by relevant departments, on behalf of the Leader’s Secretariat.
  • Managing follow-up and responses, as required.

2. Administration

  • Respond to day-to-day events and incorporate them into a dynamic online presence on multiple coordinated social media channels.
  • Electronically track metrics and engagement on Leader’s social media.
  • Build stocks of relevant content (photos, videos) that align with look and feel.

3. Public Relations

  • Contacting and working with validators, constituents and the general public as required.

4. Advisory/Research Duties

  • Remain informed of NDP policy and the Caucus’ position on topics of current interest and concern
  • Performing specialized research at the Director’s request

5. Event Preparation

  • Provide input on tour planning to ensure best possible social media content is created.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge appropriate to the position of the NDP and/or Canadian Labour movement, and of the Ontario Government and public affairs.
  • Background in communications, copy-editing, journalism, marketing a strong asset
  • Excellent communication skills and exceptional writing skills
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms including hands-on skills and experience
  • Familiarity with digital storytelling concepts like teasers, structure, flow, and identifying target audience
  • Experience in capturing broadcast-quality photo and video content
  • Experience as a content creator, video editor or writer
  • Experience writing for broadcast or video content and/or editorial an asset
  • Ability to work with the public
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure and with tight deadlines
  • Ability to conduct research
  • Good political judgment and discretion is essential
  • Proven experience working with confidential information is an asset
  • Strong office organization skills and attention to detail are essential
  • Excellent computer skills including electronic list management and record-keeping
  • Experience in the Labour movement or NDP organization and election campaigns is an asset
  • Second language skills is an asset

The Role

Reporting to the Vice-President, Communications, the Digital Communications Specialist plays an integral role on the small yet dynamic communications team at Postmedia. The Digital Communications Specialist is responsible for coordinating projects and assisting the team with a variety of communication initiatives including: website and intranet management, social media monitoring, tool design and development all targeted at both internal and external audiences.

Ongoing high demand for communication support across Postmedia requires this employee to deliver communications and project-management support in a fast-paced and time-sensitive environment while working on interesting, challenging and varied communication projects. A juggler with equal passion for words and technology would be ideal.

You can manage and prioritize multiple projects with ease, have a good sense of how to develop and adhere to corporate processes and you take pride in ensuring that communications projects remain on track while managing multiple, sometimes competing deadlines (see juggler note above). You collaborative approach, collegial attitude and can interact professionally and confidently with colleagues at all levels to understand and meet their needs. You are a curious problem solver with a creative approach to bridging gaps while delivering on objectives.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Project Management, Analysis and Reporting – You’ll ensure that the team stays on track with project deliverables and prepare updates and reports that measure progress and analyze results.
  • Website management – You will develop content, editorial calendar and manage updates for both the corporate website and employee intranet. Requires proficiency with WordPress and SharePoint. Working knowledge of design and video editing software strongly preferred.
  • Media Monitoring – You will be responsible for the collection, development and distribution of a number of Daily News Briefs on specific topics of interest
  • Internal/Employee Communications & Event Planning – You will contribute to the planning of quarterly Employee Communications, developing materials as required. You will also assist in planning, logistics, and execution for internal employee events, both online and in-person.

Who you are:

  • Training with a focus on Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or other related fields or a combination of training and experience.
