As the IAMCC Intern – Islamic Art & Material Culture, you will provide essential support to our Senior Curator of Islamic World and Collection Specialists on projects centred around Islamic the ROM’s collection of modern Middle Eastern dress and heritage arts, such as jewelry and objects of daily life, that will contribute toward a future exhibition. You will gain hands-on training using The Museum System (TMS) and acquire valuable daily experience in museum operations. Additionally, this position presents an excellent networking opportunity within the museum and academic fields, opening doors to future career pathways in art and culture. This position is funded by the Islamic Art and Material Culture Collaborative (IAMCC), part of UofT’s Institute of Islamic Studies.HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACTYou will assist the Curator by:

  • Researching relevant contemporary artists and fashion designers from 20th century Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, the Gulf, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Yemen
  • Researching individual objects, stories or contextual images/videos
  • Locating and researching potential loan objects
  • Developing and maintaining an exhibition object list
  • Creating, organizing & updating object records in TMS database
  • Providing regular updates on research status and outcomes
  • Assisting the Collection Specialists in object photography and other collections management tasks as needed
  • Taking on additional projects and day-to-day activities

WHAT YOU BRING

  • This internship is limited to University of Toronto graduates enrolled in Faculty of Arts and Science Master’s or PhD programs (Art History, History, Near Middle Eastern Civilizations, etc.).
  • Knowledge and/or museum experience in Islamic or Middle Eastern art and material culture, Islamic art displays in museums, modern Middle Eastern history, Arabic language and literature.
  • Knowledge and interest in Middle Eastern dress and jewelry is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and conduct ongoing research with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with or an understanding of collection database programs and adherence to database standards is advantageous.
  • Experience in the proper handling of artworks and artifacts is an asset.
  • Exceptional organizational, attention to detail, interpersonal, and research skills.
