  • Assist in studies for various commodity related projects, including projects involving proprietary high pressure and high temperature autoclave technology for extraction of copper, gold, silver, nickel, alumina and other metals.
  • Preparation of design calculations, documentation and development of equipment calculations and technical specifications for purchase of a wide range of mechanical equipment.
  • Evaluate Process Alternatives and/or Equipment/Technology Selection trade-off studies.
  • Evaluate suitable Materials of Construction (MOC) for various pieces of process mechanical equipment (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, flash vessels, agitators, tanks, pumps, process piping, etc.)
  • Participate in equipment design reviews and plant layout developments.
  • Perform mechanical equipment sizing, and provide input to drawings, prepare process equipment data sheets, and specifications including technical details and duties as required.
  • Ensuring mechanical process equipment specifications portray the appropriate information and process design intent.
  • Participate in process hazard review studies (e.g. HAZID / HAZOP)
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations.
  • Potential to specialize in Finite Element Analyses (FEA) to perform thermal and stress analysis of different equipment and components.
  • Working with the project team to provide input to capital and operating cost estimates.
  • Providing technical input/direction and assigning work to designers, technicians and others, as required for various projects.
  • Liaise with clients, equipment suppliers/vendors, contractor representatives and/or project field personnel as necessary to assist with meeting key project deliverables.

You bring to the role:

  • Must be working towards graduating in 2025, or recently graduated, with a Mechanical Engineering degree from an accredited University.
  • Excel academically while being actively involved in extra-curricular and/or volunteer activities at school or in the community.
  • Previous coop or summer work terms within a mechanical engineering team is an asset.
  • Academic or work experience with mechanical equipment design related to metallurgical process equipment, including ASME pressure vessel and heat exchanger design, tanks, and/or other process equipment is an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites including remote sites.

The open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.The Open Pit Electrical Technician will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of electric rope shovels, hydraulic excavators and rotary drills, while ensuring compliance with all safety and regulatory procedures.RESPONSIBILITIESYour responsibilities will include:

  • Understanding of motor control logic and MCC (600V), DC motor control (static drive) and AC drives;
  • Basic instrumentation troubleshooting (temperature sensor, pressure sensor and tachometer);
  • Understanding of PLC logic and providing troubleshooting activities as required;
  • Maintain equipment rated for 24 volt to 13.8KV;
  • Use of various tools such as: voltmeter, megger and ampere meter;
  • Ensure that safety issues are reported to the supervisor and promptly remedied;
  • Promote a positive health, safety and environment culture and the Internal Responsibility System.

QUALIFICATIONSOur ideal candidate has:

  • Electro-Dynamic / Industrial Technician Certificate;
  • Minimum of two years practical work experience within the mining sector;
  • High voltage transformer and switchgear experience is preferred;
  • Ability to work and be exposed to the elements (Working at heights, outdoor working environment);
  • Experience working at a remote work site is considered an asset;
  • Good work ethic and strong attitude towards safety.
